Kick up a childhood favourite with this cheeky take on classic mozzarella sticks.
1 package (8pc.) mozzarella Cheestrings®
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
¾ cup panko breadcrumbs
¾ cup (½ large bag) crushed tortilla chips of your choice (flamin’ hot/spicy or ranch recommended)
6 cups canola oil
Remove Cheestrings® from the package and cut each into three equal pieces, 24 pieces total.
Gather three bowls. In the first bowl, place flour and spices. In the second bowl, crack eggs and mix well with a fork or whisk. In the third bowl, combine panko and spicy tortilla chips. Chips can easily be crushed with a rolling pin or mallet, but large batches can be placed in the food processor or pulsed in a clean coffee/spice grinder.
Working a few cheese pieces at a time, place the Cheestrings® in the flour mixture, the egg, and the breadcrumb tortilla chip mixture. If the coating does not appear to cover the entire surface of the cheese, place the piece back in the egg and then into the crumb mix one additional time.
Set breaded Cheestrings® on a tray in a single layer while you complete the rest.
When all the Cheestrings® are breaded, place it in the freezer for 15 minutes to chill.
Preheat oil to 350F. Alternatively, use similar temperature settings on your air fryer or convection oven.
If frying, fry in 2-3 batches to ensure the oil doesn’t lose heat. Cook until golden brown.
